The Pirates Cove, or Korsan Koyu
Few people have heard of the bay that lies on the other side of Adrasan, just on the path that leads to the Helidonian Lighthouse. But it is not surprising, for it was not called the Pirate’s Cove for nothing – legend has it that it was used by these very thugs to hide from human eyes. Indeed, if a ship or a boat is moored there, you will never notice it from the open sea!
It was actually the harbour of ancient Melanippa, one of the Greek colonies in the Lycian region, which dates back to the Hellenistic period and was a small coastal settlement. The value of this place lay in its geographical position. Due to the fact that it was safe and sheltered, it was a harbour town visited by many seafarers. At the same time, in naval manuscripts compiled by the legendary Turkish navigator Piri Reis in the 1500s, Karaoz was named Pirate Bay.
Now, of course, many people know about this bay, as it is a popular camping spot: the place is secluded, surrounded by forest, bathed by crystal water that is refreshing even in summer. It can also be included in an individual itinerary for a visit by yacht.
