Gulet: historical information and current meaning
Gulet is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing boat, usually designed as a two-masted or three-masted wooden sailing vessel. It has been very usable in ancient times all around the Mediterranean. Now gulets are often used for holiday cruises.
The etymology of gulet is still controversial: someone argues that the name derives from the Italian “goletta” (or maybe from the italian warship “galeotta”), another from french fishing boat “goélette”.
Nowadays gulets differentiate: they can be from 15 to 45 m long, can be rigged with sails or use a motor as a drive gear, so it allows them to move even in a flat calm sea. They are fully equipped: comfy and spacious cabins can contain up to 24 people at once, so you can spend the holiday in good company with your friends and their family.
You can charter such a kind of “on-water Hotel” for a 1 week period. Yet we advise you to book it in advance – in a high season it is hardly possible to find any of them for rent.
Gulet charter price includes crew services and fuel, the meal price is extra, depending on your own preferences.
