Known as <strong data-start=\"656\" data-end=\"667\">Physkos<\/strong> in ancient times, it was once part of <strong data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"715\">Caria<\/strong> and has seen many rulers come and go \u2014 Greeks, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and eventually the Turks. Marmaris officially became part of the <strong data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"883\">Ottoman Empire<\/strong> in 1424, and in 1522, by order of <strong data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"953\">Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent<\/strong>, a fortress was built and the city was renamed Marmaris \u2014 a name believed to be derived from Ancient Greek, meaning \u201cshining\u201d or \u201cbrilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1222\">Sadly, much of the original city was destroyed in a <strong data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1168\">1957 earthquake<\/strong> and had to be rebuilt, including the iconic fortress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1707\">Despite its location on the often turbulent Aegean Sea, <strong data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1314\">Marmaris is exceptionally calm<\/strong>. Surrounded by mountains and nestled in a sheltered bay, the city is protected from strong winds and high waves \u2014 with <strong data-start=\"1434\" data-end=\"1451\">Rhodes Island<\/strong> acting as a natural breakwater. Ferries run regularly from Marmaris to Rhodes, making it easy to pop over for a Greek getaway.
